Video Conferencing–Because it’s Not Just About Voice Anymore

by Dave Gilbert on August 16, 2011

Communication technology has evolved to allow us to become so mobile that we very rarely think about distance. The more mobile we get, the less often we see the people we work with. But we all know face time matters.

When it comes to conferencing we can instantly connect to team members over an audio bridge. But how effective is an audio conversation when you’re trying to collaborate? How much better is it when we are able to share our desktops combined with audio conferencing? Now it is possible to add HD video for an experience that approximates being in the same room with your team without the high cost of travel, food and lodging.

Studies by educational researchers suggest that approximately 83 percent of human learning occurs visually. That’s why video conferencing is such an important tool for a virtual team. Citrix Online states; “Video conferencing significantly increases comprehension, data absorption and audience engagement, all of which serve to enhance decision making abilities, shorten meetings and vastly increase productivity.”

If you manage virtual teams, consider the productivity, cost and efficiency advantages of adding web conferencing to your communication toolkit. Not only will you more easily collaborate and get stuff done, you’ll cut costs, shorten the number of meetings it takes and in general, pick up speed. It’s amazing to see what happens when you give your employees the tools they need to do their jobs better/together.
